Gesture - To show, express or direct

This body of work has also evolved from my series “Aspects of Identity”.  The hands of my subjects have played an important and integral role in this series and inspired me to create this project.

In my continuing pursuit of investigating identity through portraiture, I have made a transition to photographing only the hand.  My images are simplified and in very close detail – like a topographical index.  I am interested in how identity is portrayed through this small but very revealing aspect of someone.  Each hand is extremely unique – yet universal and non-gender specific, revealing a myriad of expression and symbolism by a simple gesture.
