Aspects of Identity

Aspects of Identity – a series where I have attempted to capture the essence of the people I have photographed.  I believe that an individual's identity is often reflected in objects that hold personal and symbolic significance, or are imbued with memories.  To explore the relationship between the Self and object, I ask each person to bring a possession that holds personal history or private significance, revealing more facets of their identity.
I am intrigued with the objects that are chosen.  As a celebration of the ordinary, commonplace objects take on a life of their own.  I hope to shift the viewer's attention from the face I've photographed to the object they have chosen, raising the question about the relationship between the two and creating a narrative about identity.  I am interested in challenging the viewer's interpretation of meaning.
This series evolved into an index, in which I photographed people from different walks of life, ages and race.  By doing this, I have attempted to document people in the world around me.
