Thirteen - Youth Culture

I am very interested in the idea of identity and portraiture, and have been attempting to capture unique qualities and characteristics in my subjects for a number of years.

In this body of work, the images portray an intimate view of youth through careful examination of isolated fragments of young peoples’ bodies that are childlike yet on the verge of forming into the adult they will soon become.  The images depict an integral component of their identity and reveal a much larger story about the search for personal identity in a time of great transition.  I am interested in the part that makes the whole – revealing that time of flux between innocence and maturity – portraying the last strands of childhood and innocence that reside just below the surface.

In all my photographic series I am interested in how identity is portrayed through a small but very revealing aspect of someone.

These photographs are captured by a medium format film camera, and are selenium toned archival gelatin silver prints. Unframed sizes range from 10 x 10 to 14 x 14, framed 20 x 20 to 24 x 24.
